We recently purchase and ipad and with a pending home build or renovation (the jury’s still out….do we want pain or pain? hmmm…can’t decide) we came across an app called Houzz.
It’s an incredible online idea book with over 40,000 photos that you can search by room, style, even geographical area. When you find a photo you like, you can save it to your idea book and make notes as to why you like the photo or a specific item. The best part is, if you have an iphone or ipad, it’s portable when it is time to shop.
I have been keeping a ‘look book’ for years for any renos that we have done and it’s the first step I’d suggest to anyone who is ever planning on doing anything to their home, big or small.
Since most of us are not certified decorators, it’s the best tool and guide you can have when it comes time to making choices and purchases for your home.
Best to do both online and old school….anytime you see a photo in a magazine that you like, clip it out and save it in a photo album and try to keep it sorted by room. Over time, you’ll start to see repetitions of certain finishes or furniture and see how your personal style evolves.
For our last house, I kept clipping pictures of a kitchen with dark wood and off-white counters with semi-traditional cabinets but modern hardware. When it came time to pick out our kitchen, it was easy once I saw what we kept gravitating towards….here is the result!
More of my favourite resources for home ideas are listed below…some are magazines but all have online guides.
